The Organizers Could Face Prison
Early Wednesday morning, Richmond Police raided the Richmond Smoke Tobacco Outlet on Big Hill Avenue. The store’s signage advertised the sale of cigarettes, vapes, and soft drinks, but officers found patrons using gambling machines in a hidden back room. Authorities seized the gambling machines, along with other evidence indicating the operation had been running for quite some time.
The scheme was well-organized, as the hidden room and selective access were deliberate measures to avoid detection. Local news outlets WBON TV and WKYT revealed that a patron kept playing while police conducted the raid, inserting a fresh $20 bill into one of the machines. Authorities collected ten payout receipts from the devices and recorded that one machine had a listed jackpot of roughly $8500.
Patrons of such establishments can face a fine of up to $500, while the organizers may spend up to 10 years in prison. Two employees, M.P. and K.P., were taken into custody on the scene. Both face charges for running an illegal gambling operation, while K.P. faces additional charges for tampering with evidence, reportedly attempting to delete digital records and remove physical evidence while officers conducted their raid.

The head of the Richmond Police Department, Chief Rodney Richardson, revealed that the investigation began when a disgruntled customer who had lost thousands of dollars and felt he was being dealt with unfairly reported the venue to authorities. Unfortunately, the secretive nature of such establishments means uncovering them can be almost impossible without inside information.
He felt as if they were being unfair and he was being cheated, so he contacted police. That’s when our officers arrived and discovered what was actually inside the business.

While authorities admit they cannot catch 100% of violations, they hope to make running such venues as challenging as possible.
