EGBA calls for legislative change in Austria

The European Gaming & Betting Association (EGBA) wants the government of Austria to introduce a multi-licensing system, opening up its iGaming market to new operators and bringing it into line with the majority of Europe by replacing the current monopoly.

Austria remains one of only two EU member states that does not permit multi-licensing for iGaming, the other being Poland.

The EGBA describes the existing system as outdated, pointing to a thriving black market in Austria, with thousands of players gambling on unregulated, illegal websites.

The Austrian Association for Betting & Gambling (OVWG) believes that a multi-licensing system could generate as much as €1bn (US$1.04bn) in additional tax revenues by 2030.

Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of the EGBA, says: “The evidence from across Europe is clear and compelling, multi-licensing works.

“It brings gambling activity into the regulated market, protects consumers and generates significant tax revenue.
