The fortunate winner from Davidson County won $4 million from the North Carolina Lottery’s Supreme 7s scratch-off game
Confidence is a skill that rarely pays off in gambling, with poker maybe being the sole exception. But sometimes having the mindset of a winner can help and this is precisely the case of a lottery player from North Carolina who recently won a multi-million-dollar prize.
The Winner Was Confident He’d Win $4M and He Did
The name of the lucky winner is Thomas Harris, a Lexington resident who recently won a hefty $4 million prize from one of the scratch-off games offered by the North Carolina Education Lottery. What’s peculiar in the case of this winner is that he was confident that sooner or later he would win one of the top prizes from the Lottery’s Supreme 7s scratch-off ticket.
This is exactly what happened over the weekend after the fortunate man purchased a ticket for the popular lottery game from Tommy’s Mini Mart on West Center Street in Mebane. In an interview with the Lottery, the lucky man explained: “I always said, ‘One day I’m going to get that $4 million.’”
To Harris’ surprise, once he won the $4 million top prize from Supreme 7s, he initially didn’t believe it. Recalling the day he scratched off his winning ticket, the man said that he came back to the store where he purchased the ticket and asked for it to be scanned.
The odds of winning $4 million from Supreme 7s are 1 in 2,262,495. After Harris scored one of the top prizes, only two remain in play. In contrast, at the launch of the lottery game on July 2 this year, there were a total of four prizes of $4 million each.
The Winner Will Pay Bills, Invest the Unexpected Windfall
Earlier this week, Harris visited the Lottery headquarters to claim his prize. The Lexington man was presented with two choices: a lump cash sum of $2.4 million or $200,000 in annuity payments for the next 20 years for the whole $4 million.
Harris’ choice was the $2.4 million lump cash sum. According to the Lottery, after the applicable state and federal taxes, the fortunate winner’s bank account increased by $1,716,009. Harris explained that he intends to fix his cars and pay bills with the winnings. The Lexington man also said that he wanted to invest but did not go into further detail.
The Lottery’s Supreme 7s costs $30 per ticket. The scratch-off game grants players a chance to win a prize between $50 and $4 million. The overall odds of winning any prize from the scratch-off game are 1 in 4.18.
