Quarterly revenue from sports betting and online casino in the Canadian state of Ontario grew by 34.4% year-on-year in Q12024, with the number of active players in the state more than doubling, to almost two million.
With 80 iGaming and betting sites now live, from 50 different operators, player activity has leapt by 46% over the previous quarter and over 106% compared to the previous quarter last year.
Net operator revenue for the quarter grew by $726m y-o-y (34.4%), with the average monthly spend per active player up a huge 44.2% to $284.
Martha Otton, Executive Director of iGaming Ontario, says: “With 50 regulated operators and a one-third increase in wagering and revenue figures over the first quarter of last year, Ontarians who choose to gamble are finding many enjoyable options in our open regulated iGaming market.
“The revenue generated by Ontario’s competitive iGaming market contributes directly to provincial priorities such as infrastructure, healthcare and education.”
Online casino accounts for more than 84% of player wagers and almost 73% of revenue. $15.5bn was wagered on slots, tables games and bingo, up by 33.6%.
Sports betting wagers topped $2.5bn, an increase of 25% on Q12023. However, Q12024 was the second consecutive quarter of decline in sports betting volume.
A June 2024 report by leading accountants, Deloitte, says that the Ontario iGaming industry surpassed or almost reached many year-five projections within just two years. Excluding the state-backed lottery operator, iGaming contributed $2.7bn to GDP and sustained almost 15,000 full-time jobs.
