Sphere Entertainment Co. has unveiled its newest forays into immersive storytelling with two original productions in development: The Wizard of Oz at Sphere and From the Edge. Sphere Studios has created both titles to join the venue’s expanding roster of multi-sensory experiences under The Sphere Experience brand.

Hollywood Heavyweights Bring “The Wizard of Oz” to Life in a Futuristic Sphere Revival

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere is set to begin on August 28, 2025. This fresh take on the 1939 movie classic will turn the cherished story into a big, cutting-edge show that mixes old memories with new ideas. The show, a team effort with Warner Bros. Discovery, Google, and immersive tech firm Magnopus, plans to give the film a new look while keeping its heart intact.

Cut down to 80 minutes from its initial length, the show is set to play multiple times each day. Sources in the industry report that the project has a large production cost of about $80 million. Viewers will experience the full power of Sphere’s all-encompassing features such as ultra-HD images, 3D sound, and seats that move with the action — elements that will make famous scenes like the tornado feel real.

Leading the creative group are several big names from Hollywood, including producer Jane Rosenthal (The Irishman) visual effects expert Ben Grossmann (Hugo), film editor Jennifer Lame (Oppenheimer), and stage director Zack Winokur (Little Island). Their combined skills aim to push the boundaries of immersive filmmaking.

Oscar-Winning Duo to Launch Thrilling Extreme Sports Epic From the Edge at Sphere

Coming soon is From the Edge, a heart-pounding look at extreme sports set to launch in 2026. E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, Oscar winners known for Free Solo, will direct this film. It will highlight five top athletes in sports like free diving, skiing, rock climbing, BASE jumping, and surfing.

The movie will show Alenka Artnik, Markus Eder, Alex Honnold, Katie Hansen Lajeunesse, and Kai Lenny. Filming takes place in seven spots around the world, from Jordan’s deserts to Maui’s waves. The team uses Sphere’s special Big Sky camera system, which is built to capture images at a size and clarity never seen before.

Jim Dolan, the CEO of Sphere, says these shows demonstrate the company’s dedication to expanding its content variety and stretching the limits of what immersive media can do. The Sphere, which started operating in Las Vegas in 2023, keeps changing the game in entertainment with its unique venue and stories driven by technology.
