A 19-year-old accused in a deadly casino shooting and a number of carjackings is currently under review for the death penalty
Court records show a 19-year-old accused in a deadly crime spree across Las Vegas could be facing the death penalty.
A.W., whose rampage included a shooting at a local casino, is charged with murder with a deadly weapon, multiple counts of robbery, and reckless driving.
The charges are connected to a tragic incident that took place on March 27 at the Aliante Casino in North Las Vegas, where 23-year-old Na’Onche Osborne was shot and killed.
In the chaotic hours that followed, authorities say W. committed several carjackings across the city before being taken into custody near Sahara Avenue and Boulder Highway.
Under Review for the Death Penalty
A Clark County grand jury has since indicted the teenager. Documents obtained by FOX5 reveal the grand jury believes W. “willfully committed robbery and reckless driving” and directly links him to Osborne’s killing.
W. was supposed to show up in court on Wednesday for his arraignment. However, due to his absence, the hearing has been rescheduled for July 3.
Meanwhile, court documents indicate that the troubling case is currently being reviewed by a death penalty committee, which means that prosecutors could be seeking the harshest possible sentence in the state.
The job of the death penalty review committee is to evaluate the circumstances of the crime. This includes specific factors like premeditation, public safety risks, and the impact of the crime on the local community.
Teen Crime, on the Rise
The 23-year-old shot dead by A.W. suffered multiple gunshot wounds, as per data from the coroner’s office, which ruled the death a homicide.
He was later identified as the son of former Nevada state senator Pat Spearman, who also previously ran for mayor of North Las Vegas.
For the time being, there are no additional details regarding the suspect’s background or possible motives behind his actions.
Sadly, this is not a singular case, as incidents of teens involved in casino shootings and acts of violence against gamblers have been on the rise in recent years. Earlier this week, we also reported on the deadly clash between two rival online personalities on the Las Vegas Strip, which led to the killing of both a popular YouTuber and his spouse.
